| The cover of the Songbook is the creative statement of Janet Carlat Parr, who is also the artist of the varied art plates throughout. |
| Jan's background color design
is similar to a Vietnam service ribbon given to US military
personnel who served in the Southeast Asia involvement. The
effect of the worn and tired coloring is as a reflection of the
effects of war. While integrating an appropriately Eastern
feeling, the musical notes on the front are drawn at a half of a
step apart, which would sound very dissonant when played. This
reflects the feeling of the era - "that they should not be
played together." (i.e. the hopeful, youthful spirit of the
baby-boom generation and the grotesque, angry habit of war). The
notes are combined with a "tie," (a music term) of
barbed wire, further binding them together in a hurtful
manner.
